TSO Again Wins Music Pen Club Japan Award


Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of music director Hubert Soudant, won Best Recording by Japanese Artist at the 22nd Music Pen Club Japan Awards announced on February 1st, 2010.
The award was given for the TSO’s latest CD, Bruckner Symphony No.7, released in October 2009.

TSO under Mr. Soudant’s direction received Best Concert Performance by Japanese Artist at the 21st Music Pen Club Japan Awards 2009 for its performance of the Schubert cycle during the 2008-09 season.

The sensitive and crystal-clear tremolos at the beginning entrance me…the delicate beauty shows not only Mr. Soudant’s great characteristics but the orchestra’s excellent ability.

Music Director, Hubert Soudant & TSO Again Top Japanese Orchestras in
“Best Concert 2009”
in the February 2010 issue of Ongaku-no-Tomo.

 

Ongaku-no-tomo (Friend of Music), an established classical music magazine in Japan, ranked concerts in Japan in 2009. The Tokyo Symphony Orchestra ranked 12th overall, the same ranking with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Bernard Haitink, and first among concerts by Japanese orchestras.
The Tokyo Symphony received high marks for its November subscription concert 2009, whichconsisted of a performance of Brahms’ piano concerto No.1 and Schumann’s symphony No.2, part of the orchestra’s Schumann Symphony cycle.

Other top - ranking concerts were performances by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra led by Mariss Jansons; the Vienna Philharmonic (Zubin Mehta); and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig (Riccardo Chailly); Evgeny Kissin, (piano). The rankings appeared in the February 2009 issue.

The finale of the TSO Schumann Symphony cycle, to be performed at Suntory Hall on March 27, 2010, includes Schumann’s Symphony No.4 and Brahms’ Violin concerto, to be played by the brilliant young violinist, Valeriy Sokolov.
