-Note

  • Resume screening will take place before preliminary audition.
  • Excerpts will be supplied only for candidates after the resume screening.
  • We will prepare for the accompanist for both Preliminary and Final audition. However, applicants can not rehearse with an accompanist just before the audition. (You can warm up by yourself).
  • Tokyo Symphony Orchestra will not provide any transportation expenses and accommodations.
  • Please translate your resume into English if it is written by other languages.

  • We will announce candidates for Final on the day of preliminary. Then, excerpts for Final will be supplied right after the announcement.

Please read carefully below.

  • It is assumed that any applicant for these positions will accept employment with the Tokyo Symphony, if it is offered. If you will not accept employment with the Tokyo Symphony, please do not participate in this audition process.
  • Please also note that we can not accept recording audition.
  • Applicants should adjust your schedule for this audition schedule when you apply. Tokyo Symphony will not change any audition schedule.
  • During the auditions and after the auditions, no inquiry, please.
  • Immediate notification of acceptance or rejection is given to all applicants.
  • The Audition Committee of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra reserves the right to dismiss immediately any candidate not meeting the highest professional standards at these auditions.

Tokyo Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1946, it has been leading the orchestral world ever since. Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (TSO) engages Music Director, Hubert SOUDANT, Laureate Conductor, Kazuyoshi AKIYAMA, Permanent Conductor, Naoto OTOMO, and Resident Conductor, Norichika IIMORI. Currently, TSO has 8 international musicians from all over the world such as China, England, France, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the United States.

Tokyo Symphony was recently given the highest rank in Japanese orchestras for "The World Orchestra Ranking 2008", the annual feature of the "RECORD GEIJUTSU (Art of Record), a prestigious classical magazine considered to be the equivalent to Gramophone, lots of CD reviews, May 2008 issue.

TSO produces subscription concerts at Suntory Hall and Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall, and concert series at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space and Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, in addition to opera and ballet performances at the New National Opera Theatre since its opening in 1997. TSO has put great energy into giving premiere performances of the works of Japanese composers as well as several major contemporary works. Recently TSO has performed Janacek opera series, the Little Match Girl by H. Lachenmann, El Nino by John Adams, and Das Verrantene Meer and L'upupa by H. W. Henze.
In recognition of great achievements in contemporary music, TSO has won many music awards: the Mainichi Music Award, Minister of Education Award, Kyoto Music Award, Mainichi Art Award, Art Award of Cultural Agency, Mobile Music Award, Suntory Music Award, and Kenzo Nakajima Music Special Award.

Tokyo Symphony Orchestra agreed with the City of Kawasaki to expand its concert activities by becoming the resident orchestra of the Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall.
